Silver Stick Champs

On the weekend of November 27, 28, and 29, the Mississippi Thunder King Major Bantam team travelled north to Pembroke for the 25th Annual Pembroke Regional Silver Stick. Here is their Success Story...

On the weekend of November 27, 28, and 29, the Mississippi Thunder King Major Bantam team travelled north to Pembroke for the 25th Annual Pembroke Regional Silver Stick.

In the Round Robin portion the local lads were grouped with the highly touted West Nipissing Sting, Arnprior Packers, and Loyalist Jets.

In their first game on Friday, though the team came out strong initially, the nerves seemed to get the best of them and they stole a 3-3 tie from Nipissing.

After a good night’s sleep, the Thunder Kings were determined to come out stronger on Saturday and they did.  In the first game of the day they were matched against the Packer’s from Arnprior and skated to a very solid 2-0 win.  Their second game on Saturday saw them pitted against the Loyalist Jets.  Both teams had earned 3 points at this juncture of the tournament so the winner of this game would guarantee a birth in the Quarter Finals.  Well…the boys weren’t going to let this opportunity pass and exploded for 5 goals in the first period on route to a 7-0 victory.

Sunday brought on the Quarters, Semis and Finals for this year’s event and the local lads were hoping it was going to be a long day!!!

In the Quarter Final at the Pembroke Community Centre, MTK was pitted against the host Pembroke Lumber Kings.  The boys knew it wasn’t going to be easy as Pembroke always is a formidable opponent and came out strong!  The Thunder Kings were very impressive in their 3-2 victory though there were a few tense moments in the dying seconds when the Lumberkings pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.

The Semi Final saw the Thunder Kings matched against the Aylmer Voilers at the Pembroke Memorial Centre.  Aylmer is a very good skating team but they were no match for the tenacious play of our boys.  The Thunder Kings out skated and out worked the Voilers for a 3-1 win.

The Finals were back at the Pembroke Community Centre.  In the Championship game the Thunder Kings were matched against league rival Nepean Raiders.  Nepean jumped out to the early lead with a power play goal.  However the boys rallied quickly and came back with 4 unanswered goals on their way to a 5-2 win and the Championship.

The team really came into shape this weekend and bought into disciplined team play, played solid defensive hockey and received outstanding goaltending.

The Bantam Thunder Kings will be travelling to Port Huron, Michigan in January in an attempt to bring the International Silver Stick Championship to our region.
